RECORD OF A 3RD SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19
INTRODUCTION
This report covers update from 17th April 2020 to 24th April 2020 and entails the management of a 3rd suspected case of Covid-19 at Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital (MWCH). This week report also covers a visit by a team from Central Region Health Services Directorate to MWCH.
THE SCREENING TEAM
Monitoring of the screening process and distribution of tissue papers, hand sanitizers and soaps for hand hygiene are carried out daily. The screening team held a meeting for its members. The discussions at the meeting were focused on intensifying the screening process and probing further during the screening process to ensure that patient gives accurate and complete information.
THE COMMUNICATION TEAM
- Health Education at the facility –Education at the facility has been on-going at OPD, Male wards, Female wards and other units.
- Public education outside the facility
Health education on COVID-19 on radio stations has been on-going at Obrumankuma FM station and Coastal FM. Health education discussions were centred on precautionary measures of Covid-19.
INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL TEAM
- Disinfection at the facility: Regular cleaning of the facility using disinfectant is being done on daily basis.
- Ensuring social distancing: The policy one visitor to a patient instituted earlier on is being enforced.
- IPC refresher training course to be organized for the Suspected Case Management team.
SUSPECTED CASE MANAGEMENT TEAM
The case management team is responsible for ensuring that patients or Staff who meets the case definition of COVID-19 is given the needed care until the case is confirmed or otherwise.
RECORD OF 3rd SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19
A man of 55years reported to the facility on Monday, 20th April, 2020. He complained of having difficulty in breathing, cough, palpitation and fatigue. He had travelled from Accra to prayer camp at Baifikrom. Temperature was 37oC. The patient was given a face mask and isolated.
Contact with DHMT
Protocol for patient flow in Covid-19 was followed.
The Chairman for Covid-19 was contacted and informed about the suspected case. The Medical Director was contacted and the DHMT was informed. The suspected Case Management Team was activated to care for the patient. DHMT took the sample to Noguchi for the test of a suspected case of Covid-19 on 21st April, 2020.
Caring for the Patient
The suspected case management team was activated and they have been caring for the patient by following protocols for barrier nursing. The team have been following the IPC protocols and measures in ensuring their safety pending the outcome of the result from Noguchi. The result for the test from Noguchi is not in yet and so care for the patient is still on-going.
