RECORD OF SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19
INTRODUCTION
This report covers update from 6th April to 17th April 2020 and entails the management of a suspected case of Covid-19 at Mercy Women’s Catholic Hospital (MWCH).
THE SCREENING TEAM
Monitoring of the screening process and distribution of tissue papers, hand sanitizers and soaps for hand hygiene are carried out daily.
THE COMMUNICATION TEAM
- Health Education at the facility –Education at the facility has been on-going at OPD, Male wards, Female wards and other units.
- Public education outside the facility
Health education on COVID-19 on radio stations has been carried out at the two major local FM stations.
INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL TEAM
- Disinfection at the facility: Regular cleaning of the facility using disinfectant is being done on daily basis.
- Ensuring social distancing: The policy one visitor to a patient instituted earlier on is being enforced.
SUSPECTED CASE MANAGEMENT TEAM
The case management team is responsible for ensuring that patients or Staff who meets the case definition of COVID-19 is given the needed care until the case is confirmed. Training for the Suspected Case Management team by the DHMT was held on Monday, 6th of April 2020.
RECORD OF 2ND SUSPECTED CASE OF COVID-19
A 31 year old male reported to the facility on 10th of April, 2020 with complaints of cough and difficulty in breathing. He was a resident in Accra and came to Mankessim in about three weeks ago. The patient was diagnosed with Pneumonia and suspected case of Covid-19.
Contact with DHMT
Protocol for patient flow in Covid-19 was followed.
The patient was given a face mask and isolated. The Chairman for Covid-19 was contacted and informed about the suspected case. The Medical Director was contacted and the DHMT was informed. The suspected Case Management Team was activated to care for the patient. DHMT took the sample to Noguchi for the test of a suspected case of Covid-19.
Caring for the Patient
The suspected case management team was activated and they cared for the patient by following protocols for barrier nursing. The test from Noguchi took four days for the facility to be informed of the result. The patient was taken care of by the suspected case management team. The team followed the IPC protocols and measures in ensuring their safety pending the outcome of the result from Noguchi. The result for the test was negative.
